- 1. Start by sifting together the first four ingredients. Then, add the cornmeal and sugar to the mixture.
- 2. Mix the vanilla with water, and gradually add it to the dry ingredients until you form a soft dough. Lightly knead the dough and let it rest, covered, for 30 minutes.
- 3. After resting, divide the dough into eight equal portions. Flour your hands and lightly knead each portion. Roll and pull them into 6-inch by 1 1/2-inch lengths, about 1/8 inch thick.
- 4. Heat plenty of oil in a pan until it's hot. Fry the dough portions until they turn golden brown, making sure to pierce them with a fork while turning. Serve hot.
If you're serving the Festival with fried fish, fry the festival after the fish using the same oil.
