Hard Dough Bread recipe
Ingredients
- 6 cups baking flour
- 11/2 tbsp. salt
- 4 oz shortening
- 1/2 cup sugar
- 2 cup warm water
- 2 tbsp. dried yeast
- Glaze
- 1/2 Cup water
- 1 Tbsp sugar
Cooking Directions
- 1. Sift 5 cups of flour into a large bowl.
- 2. Add a pinch of salt and rub in the shortening until the mixture resembles breadcrumbs.
- 3. Place 1 tablespoon of sugar in a small bowl with the yeast.
- 4. Pour warm water over the yeast mixture. Ensure the water is not too hot to avoid killing the yeast.
- 5. Let the mixture stand for 10 minutes until bubbles form on top, indicating the yeast is active.
- 6. Stir the remaining sugar into the flour mixture.
- 7. Gradually add the yeast mixture, mixing until a soft, pliable dough forms.
- 8. Knead the dough thoroughly for 10 minutes, adding more flour if necessary.
- 9. Divide the dough between two greased 4-inch x 8-inch loaf tins.
- 10. Cover the tins lightly with a damp cloth.
- 11. Leave the dough to rise in a warm place until it doubles in size (approximately 45-60 minutes).
- 12. Dissolve the sugar in water to create the glaze.
- 13. Brush the tops of the loaves with the glaze.
- 14. Place a small ovenproof bowl of hot water on the bottom rack of the oven.
- 15. Carefully place the loaf tins on the top shelf, avoiding any sudden movements.
- 16. Bake at 375°F for 15-20 minutes, or until the loaves are golden brown.
- Cool
