Authentic Jamaican Beef Patty Recipe
Ingredients
- Patty pastry
- Filling:
- 12 oz ground beef
- 2 tbsp oil
- 1 sprig of thyme
- 3 stalks scallion, chopped
- 1 small hot pepper, finely chopped
- 4 slices bread
- 1½ cups water
- 1½ tbsp salt
- ½ tbsp pepper
- 2 egg yolks, beaten (or ½ cup milk for glazing)
Cooking Directions
- 1. Prepare the pastry and chill it in the refrigerator until ready to roll.
- 2. In a skillet, heat oil and fry the ground beef with thyme for about 15 minutes.
- 3. Add the chopped scallion and hot pepper; cook while stirring for an additional 5 minutes.
- 4. Soak the bread in water for 2 minutes, then blend to form a smooth puree.
- 5. Mix the bread puree with the meat mixture, seasoning with salt and pepper. Continue to cook for 3 minutes ensuring the filling remains moist.
- 6. Roll out the chilled pastry to 1/8 inch thickness and cut into 6-inch diameter circles.
- 7. Place a portion of the meat filling on each pastry round. Brush the edges with water, fold, and seal the patties.
- 8. Glaze each patty with beaten egg yolk (or milk) and bake on the top shelf at 450°F for about 25 minutes until golden brown.
