Jamaican Red Peas Soup

Red Peas Soup is a traditional Jamaican favorite. Made with red kidney beans, beef, yam, breadfruit, dumplings, and seasoned with thyme and Scotch bonnet, it’s a filling and flavorful one-pot meal.
Ingredients
- 1 quart water
- 3 cups red kidney beans, soaked overnight
- 1 lb stewing beef
- 1/2 lb yam, cubed
- 1 medium potato, cubed
- 1 medium carrot, chopped
- 1 medium sweet potato, chopped
- Spinners (dumplings)
- 3 stalks escallion, chopped
- 6 slices breadfruit
- 1 sprig fresh thyme
- 1 whole Scotch bonnet pepper
- 1 (12 oz) package chicken or beef soup mix
Directions
- Boil water, then add beef and kidney beans. Simmer until tender.
- Add yam, potato, carrot, sweet potato, and spinners. Cook 20–30 minutes.
- Add escallion, breadfruit, thyme, Scotch bonnet, and soup mix. Stir well.
- Simmer 15 more minutes. Remove thyme and Scotch bonnet before serving.
