Jamaican Steamed Fish

Steamed Fish is a healthy Jamaican dish made by steaming snapper or other fish with onion, scallion, thyme, tomato, and Scotch bonnet pepper. The fish is tender, flavorful, and cooked in a light, aromatic sauce.

Ingredients

  • 2 lbs fish (snapper or other firm fish)
  • 2 oz butter (optional)
  • 1 small onion
  • 2 medium tomatoes
  • 2 stalks scallion
  • 2 sprigs thyme
  • 1 Scotch bonnet pepper (optional)
  • 2 tbsp ketchup (optional)
  • 5 crushed pimento seeds (optional)
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 5 tbsp cooking oil
  • 1/2 cup water
  • Okra (optional)

Directions

  1. Clean the fish and season with salt and pepper.
  2. Sauté onion, scallion, thyme, pimento, and tomatoes in oil for 5 minutes.
  3. Add water and place fish on vegetables. Add okra if using. Cover and steam 10 minutes.
  4. Add ketchup and butter, cover, and steam 7–10 minutes more until fish is tender.

Tips and Serving

Serve with rice and peas, bammy, or boiled ground provisions for a traditional Jamaican meal. Use fresh snapper for best results.
