Employment in Jamaica for Foreign Nationals
Jamaica regulates employment for foreign nationals under the Foreign Nationals and Commonwealth Citizens (Employment) Act of 1964. This Act prioritizes job opportunities for qualified Jamaicans while permitting the employment of skilled foreign workers when local expertise is insufficient. Additionally, any foreign worker relocating between parishes must notify the Ministry of Labour.
Work Permits
For Commonwealth Citizens:
- May apply for work permits upon arrival in Jamaica.
- Qualified relatives over 18 with specialized skills are also eligible to apply.
For Non-Commonwealth Citizens:
- Must obtain a work permit prior to arriving in Jamaica.
For instance, United States citizens - classified as non-Commonwealth nationals - must secure a work permit before applying for a work visa at a Jamaican Embassy or Consulate.
Application Process
- Obtain the necessary application forms from the Government Printing Office.
- The prospective employer must complete, sign, and submit these forms along with the required documentation.
- Include proof that the job vacancy was publicly advertised.
- Work visas are issued once a confirmed job offer is provided.
Work permits are granted at the discretion of the Ministry of Labour. For additional guidance, please contact:
