The Jamaican dollar (JMD) is the local currency. Prices in resort areas may also be shown in USD.
Carry small JMD bills for markets, taxis, and tips. Larger hotels and shops accept major cards.
Use bank ATMs for the best rates. Avoid street exchanges. Ask your bank about foreign fees.
Some places set their own USD exchange rate. If paying in USD, confirm the rate first.
Tipping is appreciated. Check if a service charge was added. If not, 10–15% is common in restaurants.

Health and safety

Sun is strong. Use reef safe sunscreen, a hat, and drink water through the day.
Mosquitoes are present in some areas. Pack repellent and light long sleeves for evenings.
Swim where lifeguards are present and follow beach flags. Ask locals about currents before cliff jumps or river swims.
Buy travel insurance that covers medical care and activities you plan to do.

Connectivity: SIM and eSIM

Buy a local SIM or eSIM for data and maps. Airports and city shops sell visitor plans.
Major carriers include Digicel and Flow. Bring an unlocked phone to use local service.
Hotel Wi Fi quality varies. Download offline maps and key bookings before you travel.
Use messaging apps for calls over Wi Fi to save minutes.

Cultural etiquette

Greet with a simple “Good morning” or “Good afternoon.” Polite greetings go a long way.
Dress modestly for churches and rural communities. Beachwear is for the beach.
Ask before taking photos of people or on private property.
