Portland Beaches & Waterfalls

Portland is Jamaica’s greenest corner. Rivers meet quiet coves, hills stay cool, and days move at an easy pace. Base in Port Antonio and plan short hops: a waterfall swim in the morning and a calm beach in the afternoon with a simple lunch in between.

This page stays practical. It lists the key spots, how to plan a day, best times to avoid crowds, typical fees, and clear safety and transport tips.

Key spots

Reach Falls

Emerald pools under thick forest with clear water and smooth rock ledges. The official entrance has lifeguards and marked areas. Wear water shoes. Guides can point out safe holds and optional upstream features when conditions allow.

Frenchman’s Cove

A small river meets the sea, forming a gentle lagoon and a short arc of sand. Good for families and low-effort swims. Shade arrives early from the valley walls. Entry fees apply. Loungers and simple food are available on site.

Boston Bay

Open bay with a light surf break and the island’s best-known jerk stands next door. Board rentals and lessons appear most days. Expect more swell and a stronger pull than in coves. Confident swimmers only when waves pick up.

Winnifred Beach

Community-run cove with a sandy entry and reef close to shore. Local stalls serve fish, fritters, and cold drinks. Bring small cash. The water is often calm and clear, great for a relaxed snorkel along the edges.

How to plan a day

Keep travel short. Reach Falls sits inland and pairs well with a late lunch and beach time at Winnifred or Frenchman’s. If surf is your goal, start at Boston Bay, then drift to a quieter cove after lunch.

Pack light: water shoes, small towel, reef-safe sunscreen, insect repellent for forest edges, and a dry pouch for phones. Carry small cash for gates, chairs, and food.

If you are driving, set one base and add only one or two stops. Roads are narrow and slow. Private drivers know the pull-offs and save time finding parking.

Timing and crowds

Mornings are cooler with fewer people at Reach Falls and the beaches. Water is usually clearest early before sand is stirred up.

Midday brings brighter photos and more heat. Expect more visitors on weekends and holidays. Portland sees fewer cruise crowds than other parishes, but local holiday periods are busy.

Rain checks. After heavy rain, rivers can turn brown and flow faster. Ask on the day if swimming is open and safe.

Fees and permits

Reach Falls: Official entrance fee per person; guides included for safety in marked areas. Card acceptance varies. Bring cash.

Frenchman’s Cove: Entry fee per person. Lounger and umbrella rentals cost extra. Food and drinks available on site.

Boston Bay: Small gate or parking fee may apply. Board rentals and lessons are paid on the beach.

Winnifred Beach: Community-managed. Donations or a small gate fee help maintain the beach. Support local stalls when you can.

Fees change seasonally. Ask your hotel or driver for current rates before you go.

Safety and transport tips

Water safety. Obey signs and lifeguards. At surf beaches, stay inside flagged zones and skip swims if you are unsure. River rocks are slick; step carefully and use water shoes.

Sun and bugs. Use reef-safe sunscreen, wear a hat, and reapply after swims. Carry repellent for shaded trails and riverbanks.

Driving. Roads are winding. Do not rush. Avoid night driving on unfamiliar routes. Park in marked lots and do not leave valuables in cars.

Getting around. Private drivers are simplest. Route taxis work between towns but require changes. Confirm pickup points and return times if you ride with a driver.
